The best time to visit Socotra

When to go to Socotra: the season runs roughly October to May, the summer monsoon shuts much of the island down, and December to February is the calm, cool peak. Month-by-month guidance.

Last updated: June 2026

Socotra has a clear travel season — roughly October to May — bookended by a fierce summer monsoon. Choosing the right month shapes the weather, the seas, the crowds and even which trees are in bloom.

Here is how the year actually looks on the island.

Avoid the monsoon: June to September

From about June to September the southwest monsoon (khareef) brings powerful winds and rough seas. Boat trips become difficult or impossible, camping is unpleasant, flights are reduced, and many operators simply close. Unless you have a very specific reason, do not plan a Socotra trip in these months.

Peak season: December to February

These are the most popular months for good reason — calm seas, comfortable daytime temperatures, clear skies and the best conditions for boat trips, snorkelling and stargazing. It is the most reliable window, so flights and the better operators book up earliest.

Shoulder months: October–November and March–April

October and November ease in after the monsoon, with fewer travelers. March and April get noticeably hotter, but reward you with the bottle trees in pink bloom and still-quiet sites. Wind and some swell are possible at the season's edges, but plenty of travelers prefer the shoulder for the lighter crowds.

Flights, and booking ahead

Access is by a limited charter — currently roughly one flight a week via Jeddah — so seats are the real bottleneck, not hotel rooms. For peak season especially, book your operator and flight well in advance; three months out is considered last-minute on Socotra.
